SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.00 g, 11 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Diademed head of Arethousa to right, wearing circular earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 574.3 (this coin, illustrated on pl. 21, V287/R394). Boston MFA 377 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 1330 (same dies). SNG Lockett 943 (same dies). Perfectly centered and attractively toned, and with an exceptional pedigree. Slightly rough and with minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
